2015 - China Global Warming

2015.  China’s coal consumption projection to reach 2.3 billion tons by 2015.  “As China's current consumption of 1.3 billion tons of coal rises to almost 2 billion in 2010 [actual 3.7 billion short tons for 2010] and 2.3 billion in 2015, [Charles Johnson, an expert on coal pollution at the East-West Center in Honolulu] says China is slowly beginning to implement environmental technologies. ‘Even then the situation is going to worsen over the next decade,’ he says.” (Sheila Tefft, Staff writer, “Rush to Burn Coal Turns China Into Asia's Polluter,” Christian Science Monitor, August 30, 1995, p. 1)  China’s coal consumption surpassed 2.3 billion tons in 2005 (ten years ahead of schedule) reaching 2.4 short tons that year.

2015.  China to mine 25% more coal by 2015.  “Last month [July 2010] , the International Energy Agency published data showing that China is now the world's largest consumer of energy.  Three years ago [2007], China became the world's largest carbon-dioxide emitter.  And while, in a public speech, Premier Wen threatened to use an ‘iron hand’ to control inefficient, runaway energy use, at the same time his government launched a new five-year plan to mine 25 percent more coal, 3.6 billion tons, by 2015.”  (Joel Brinkley, “China's coal addiction,” San Francisco Chronicle, Sunday, August 1, 2010, p. 2090 - China Global Warming

2090-2099.  China’s agriculture and food supplies projected to be dramatically disrupted by extreme weather events .  “Climate change and extreme weather events pose a grave challenge to the country's [China’s] food supply, agricultural researchers have warned.  Gu Lianhong, a senior researcher with Oak Ridge National Laboratory in the US, said the lab's research had shown climate change will cause China's per capita grain output will dramatically drop after 2020, even taking technological progress into consideration. The study suggests the projected geographical pattern of earth's surface temperature will dramatically increase in the late 21st century (2090-2099). This will cause more extreme weather and climate events to impact such industries as agriculture, Gu said.  He stressed that increasing droughts and heavy precipitation, more intense tropical cyclones and warmer days will very likely happen globally. ‘These [increasing droughts and heavy precipitation caused climate change] are all closely related with grain output,’ Gu said.”  (Wang Qian, “Climate threatens China's food supply,” Xinhua News Agency, Beijing, China, June 22, 2010)
